Going on a fishing holiday is always exciting time, however coming out last in the draw and getting an unfavoured swim can somewhat dampen your spirit. This is exactly what happened in summer 2020.

Making my way to the swim, knowing a hard week was coming, I had my eyes firmly locked onto the water looking for any sign of carp, nothing was giving itself up so time for a tactical change.  I decided to fish away from the normal ‘go too areas’ that the bailiffs tell you about on arrival. A risky move to ignore advice from a bailiff that is on the lake all year but one that was to pay dividend.

I had a good plum around and found a slightly raised area just at 7 wraps to my right-hand side. It only raised roughly 2ft from the 15ft depth but nevertheless it was a feature on a clear lakebed with very little to fish to. I proceeded to bait the area but not fish it for the first 3 days aiming to allow the fish to feed comfortable on the area with no disturbance. On the evening of the 4th day I cast to the area. The lead landing with a solid donk, I was feeling optimistic and with the rest of my swim still void of any life it was as good a chance as any.

At 7 the following morning the delkim started sounding with a slow bleep bleep, I turn and see the bobbing creeping up little by little. I pull into the fish and its heavy but not taking any line. I reel in and it feels like I’m pulling a slab through the water, she’s hugging the bottom. After 5 minutes, which felt a lot longer, she finally slips into the net at a massive 57.8. a new pb for me. Only managed that one all week but what a one to have.

Tight lines,

Danny
